Dancing In The Morgue - Chapter 3

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Happy is he who still loves something he loved in the nursery: He has not been broken in two by time; he is not two men, but one, and he has saved not only his soul but his life.

-G.K. Chesterton

Emily was scared. Special Agent Derek Morgan was scary. He was black, appeared to be very tall, all buff and he looked pretty strong and secure, unlike Agent Reid. He didn't look like someone Emily wouldn't want to make fun of or flirt with.

Unlike Mr. Reid over there, Morgan looked like he would surely, yet politely tell her to fuck off (without the use of the verb to fuck or any adverb or adjective from its family of words) or, even worse, just plain ignore her. Emily didn't enjoy being ignored. She liked to cause a scene wherever she walked into a room, that is why she dressed like that and had such an orange hair. She was all about the show, even though she got shy around certain people. Morgan was one of those people. He made her volatile confidence all vanish in less than nothing.

During the whole drive, nobody said a word. Emily felt too intimidated to even look at Agent Morgan. She also didn't feel comfortable looking at Agent Reid, but she did anyways. She found his face somewhat funny. She thought he had a very manly jawline, even though he had a smile like a little child. He was the perfect combination of what Emily was and what she wanted to be: she was twenty-two years old but she sometimes felt like a child, mostly at work. She felt like everyone bossed her around and treated her like she wasn't worth it. However, at home, she was required to think and act like a grown woman, due to her grandmother's condition. It was all so confusing for her wandering mind, to deal with such a complicated overall life. She wanted to be an irresponsible child all over again, back when all the choices were to paint the sky blue or go a little crazy and paint it purple or pink.

Agent Spencer Reid had that childish look to him that Emily desired so bad. However, she could tell he tried way too hard to be taken seriously. She liked that about a man. Well, she did not exactly have a list of criteria a man had to have in order to win her heart, but still. Her former boyfriend was your typical athlete, all good looking and somewhat mentally pathetic. Not the sharpest crayon in the box. He was a rather sweet guy, though, or at least he faked very well. But then again, when it comes to sex, all men are professional fakes, pretending to be someone they're not in order to get some booty. Agent Reid looked nothing like that, though. He didn't look like the kind of guy who would hurt a woman's feelings. He looked like a child trying to grow up way too fast.

Morgan finally parked the car outside a white building that looked way too normal to be an FBI building. It looked more like your everyday PD building. Which it was. Emily looked at it like she didn't really want to get in.

What the flying fornication? she thought, widening her eyes, as Morgan told her to step out of the car. She obeyed, not saying one word, looking up at Morgan but unable to look him in the eyes. He looked like he could split her skull into two with just a blow. Not that he would do it, but he sure had arms toned enough to actually accomplish it.

With Agent Morgan grabbing her wrist, firmly but not hurting it, Emily entered the building, completely unsure of what to expect. Most of the rooms had glass doors, so she could see all the people working on their computers, taking photocopies and answering phones. Didn't look to fun or awesome, as Emily would imagine a police station would be, though.

Agent Morgan guided her though a corridor, with Agent Reid right behind them, following. She noticed how much taller Reid was. There was a door right in front of them, a wooden door, hollow, not see-through. There was a piece of paper taped to the door, it said FOR STAFF ONLY, in a silly handwriting that looked as if it had been written all in a hurry. Emily felt like she shouldn't be there. For the first time ever, she actually wished she was at the Morgue.

Agent Morgan reached for his pocket and grabbed a never-ending set of keys. Going through a number of them small silver noise-making keys, he picked one and opened the door.

The room didn't look too scary or weird. It was just a normal small room, with a dark wooden desk and bookshelves full of books, a computer on the desk, a really ugly plant by the window... Emily wanted so bad to sit on that blue office chair that looked so comfortable, but she didn't dare moving an inch.

"Please take a seat." Agent Reid said to her, pointing to the comfy chair she had been staring at. He talked really low, like he was afraid of being loud. And he always said Please, even if it was not necessary. Emily found it quite adorable. She melted inside with the heat of his tiny voice.

Yay! she thought to herself, for just a fraction of a second. Then came a feeling of slight fear. What happens next?

She sat on the chair, looking around at the room, not able to look at Agent Morgan's face or Agent Reid. Reid sat on a chair just like the one she was sitting on, on the other side of the desk, facing the computer. Morgan stood up, since there weren't any more chairs. He stood tall, very tall, with his buff arms folded over his toned chest. He looked tough but calm. Emily wondered what would happen next.

"Emily..." Agent Reid started, forcing her to look him in his light-brown eyes with her deep blue ones. "...We're gonna be completely honest with you here." His tone wasn't any louder. She had to make an effort to truly hear him out.

She swallowed her own saliva. She had no idea what he was preparing to say, but it sounded like she was going to get into trouble, for some reason, even though she had nothing to do with what had happened to her parents. It's not like she murdered them!

"I know that the story told is that your father murdered your mother and then committed suicide..." Reid continued. She was gazing into his eyes, trying to look as empty as she felt. Except that emptiness really wasn't emptiness, it was raw pain instead. Raw pain for being forced to remember that awful night when she found her mother's dead body, soaked in blood, with multiple stab wounds. That was a night not to remember.

"Dr. Reid..." she said with such a low voice that almost sounded like a whisper. Lower than his own. "Why do we have to talk about this?" she was trying her best to show how strong she was, that those events from her past wasn't painful at all. "There are so many things you and I could talk about..." she tried to sound flirty. Like she wanted to change the subject and avoid the conversation into something much more amusing and less painful. She failed, though. All the sadness from within was quite obvious. She couldn't act strong and flirty with such a heavy heart.

Morgan didn't say a word or move an inch. He kept looking at her like he was waiting for something she'd say or do. She would sometimes glance up at him, focusing on his jaw or chest, avoiding eye contact as much as she could.

"Focus, Emily!" Reid said, looking deep into her eyes. She trembled and almost broke her hard shell for a second. "This is important, mostly to you." he explained, not breaking the eye contact.

"Only if I can be alone with you." She said, trying to sound like she wanted to be alone with him to flirt. Which wasn't true. She wanted to be alone with him, because he looked like someone she could cry with. For some reason, she wanted to hug him and cry like all her sorrows away. But not around Morgan; he was far too scary and intimidating.

Reid looked up at Morgan. He seemed hesitating, but he ended up saying yes and left the room.

"But if she tries anything, scream for me!" he said, making both Reid and Emily smile a little.

She felt a little more comfortable now that the big buff black guy wasn't in the room, but she still wasn't a hundred percent sure if she could just stop acting like the bitch she wasn't or just be herself. She didn't know if Reid could be trusted, even though he looked like someone she could tell all her secrets too. Looks can be deceiving.
To my brother, the re-birth of the my inner long lost child.
